Evaluation: Question 5

This is our groups question 5 for the evaluation within this question we had to look at our audience research that we did before we started our thriller, and we had to explain why we chose that specific target audience.

Q5) how did you attract/address your audience?

Before we did are film we carried out research in the form of a questionnaire, this questionnaire consisted of questions about what people would like to see in a thriller opening. The questions were open questions and we only got qualitative data back as this is information from speak and not numerical data. Within our questionnaires, we found a pattern of information arising out of it; this is that people like thrillers and more specifically horror thrillers (7 out of 8 people), so with this information in hand we decided to cater to the audiences needs and produced a horror thriller or at least the opening.

Also with the information gained out of the questionnaire we found out that all the people we question that they would like to see either 2/3 characters at the beginning of the thriller, we also satisfied our viewers by having two boys  ( Angus and Nathan ) walking with one bad character         ( Aaron). This information that we acquired was very helpful in meeting our viewer’s demands, and helped us make a better thriller then we could have achieved before this also made us think about what we wanted in the thriller and helped us construct our opening better.

Here you can clearly see that there are two main characters that are good or protagonist characters. This would apply to our research as we are doing the things are viewers demand this could increase are views for the film as we have listened to our viewers and made certain and specific changes to cater for our viewers.

The research would also apply for the other characters as our viewers wanted to see a bad person or antagonist at the start of the film so we put one in, also adding another character would allow our group to have 3 characters which would apply to the research for the number of characters we would have in our thriller. These would be two examples of how we have listened to our viewers.

Our group feels that targeting a specific audience is very important as we feel that we would want a certain group of people to watch the thriller, and that is what we are catering for and feel them would enjoy the thriller the most. As we have put so much time and effort into targeting the certain audience teens we feel that hopefully most teens would go to see the film and enjoy the feature. Targeting a specific audience is also easier to do as trying to please a mass market is very hard, the benefits of having a certain audience could be that other people outside the intended target group may watch the thriller as well.

Evaluation: Question 3

For Q3 of the evaluation we have to find out the different companies that could produce and distribute films and decide which one we wanted to produce our film, for this i did a pixton comic strip to show two people talking about who we would have, also i did a IMdb document about our film

We would be produced by Bigtalk productions; they are a London based British film company and they have produced big movies like attack the block and Shaun of the dead. This would be a great company to produce our thriller as they are British and will already have a large fan base so this will interest people in our movie.

Our movie would also be distributed by universal pictures, they are a American based company but have a company in the united kingdom. Universal pictures have distributed many big movies names such as despicable me and little fockers.

Evaluation: Question 2

This is our groups question number 2 for the evaluation, the question tells the audience about which groups we chose to show in our film, how we  showed them and what stereotypes we were using.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

 

Our media group chose the audience of teenagers as our age rating was a 12. We thought that it would be easier to have an audience of teenagers as we are teens so we know what others would like. We showed in our media thriller the certain teenager group we were catering for by having stereotypical clothing on like jeans, trainers and fashionable hats that teenagers and younger people would wear. This would connote that we are teenagers and the audience is teens as older people would not wear as it would be seen cool and in fashion by younger people but not older.

 

 

Also we used colours to connote who was the central antagonist and who was the central protagonist by using colours of clothing. For the central antagonist (bad guy) we used black clothing to show that this certain person was dark and evil. On the other hand, the central protagonist (good guy) was clothed in bright colours to make him stand out and show he is good. In our thriller film this is easily viewable and there is a big contrast between the two characters.

We changed the actions of the characters because the antagonist is doing suspicious things like walking in the trees, writing weird letters and looking over dead bodies. Then the protagonist and his friend are walking normally through the woods. This would lead the viewers to think that the antagonist is different and the bad guy in the thriller because of the difference in actions by the two characters.

We also used all male characters within the thriller; this is because stereotypically males are stronger and more violent so we used a male as the main antagonist to show strength and power. On the other hand we used to males as innocent schoolboys and unaware of the antagonists presence. This is another contrast in the use of characters as we have one male who is powerful and has dominance also is killer and may kill again? And two young innocent schoolboys, this makes the thriller interesting and worth watching because of these contrast.

We choose to represent these things in the way in which we did because it is what we felt have to be done and what we would have liked to see. Like the different actions of the characters, in a thriller opening you would not see a antagonist (bad guy) helping a man with his shopping so our thriller is no different because we have the antagonist doing weird and suspicious things to make him look odd and different to the other main characters. This is the same with colour as we want the bad guy to be wearing black to signify that he is dangerous and bad, we have done this because you would not see a antagonist in white or blue that connotes purity and weakness. 

We used stereotypes by the certain location, the location is in a woods and this could be linked to teens as they may be in the wood to do bad things like drugs, etc. In our thriller we broke this stereotypical location because the two good characters are just having a conversation and walking home from school this could be a good thing because it would show that the two good characters are in fact good because they are not doing anything in the woods.

We are trying to give the impression at first sight, which are the good characters in the thriller and who is the antagonist is. This is done by the use of the location, clothing and the use of actions. I think that in the opening it is very clear who are the main characters and you could possibly get some background on the characters. Also we could be breaking some stereotypes for people which would be a good thing.

Media Horror Script Final

The horror thriller starts off in the woods with two school boys walking home; the killer is not far away from them and can be seen in different shots dragging a dead body through the woods into a ditch. After this the killer catches a glimpse of the school boys walking through the woods. The last thing in this short horror opening is the two school boys walking out of the woods, with the central antagonist being quite clearly seen in the background.

Throughout this trailer we will include very quick flashing pictures. The pictures will be up for approximately 0.5 seconds till 1 second. This gives the audience who are watching it a short time to see it, as we are hoping to tell part of the plot through pictures. The pictures will consist of the central antagonist doing various things, e.g. dragging a body away. We are also going to include pictures of his hands and feet that we will filter into black and white.  The actual recorded footage on the other hand will be the two school boys walking through the woods on their way home. This is when the pictures will flash up between some lines that they say. We are hoping to include at least 15 – 30 different pictures.

We are starting with an establishing shot of the woods to set the scene. We then transition from this to a long shot of the two school boys walking towards the camera. We then switch to a tracking shot of the boys walking. We could also use some pictures of the antagonist to use as transitions to various shots of the boys.  Credits will also be appearing on the ground and various trees at the side as the boys are walking down. It is also possible that we could use some dark eerie music to signify that something bad is going to happen. We have also tried to use typical teenage stereotypes as we have included an Xbox in the dialogue. One of the things Nathan says is “Have you seen Sam recently?” this shows that the dead body that can be seen being dragged is Sam’s.

·         Sam could also be dressed as a school boy

·         The two school boys could be talking about a missing person at their school possibly a friend

·         Could say something like “Why did the school say we should walk home in pairs?”

·         The killer could be targeting school boys

Horror thriller opening, set in present day, shot in a wooded area (Establishing shot of the woods). The two friends are walking through the woods having a day to day conversation (Long shot switch to tracking shot), when they stumble across a dead body (Point of view shot). The two friends check the pulse of the body, when they first see it (Close-up of dead body). One scans around the area, whilst the other one tries to ring for help (Close-up of phone) (He can get no connection on his phone).  Then a quick jump cut to the sharp object in the hand of the killer, then it cuts back to the two friends. Then we see a point of view shot from the view of the antagonist as he is walking towards the backs of the friends. We then hear a branch snap and the two friends turn around and run away. The killer does not chase them, but is seen in various places as they are running away, but the friends do not spot him. One friend falls to the floor, then as he gets up, is grabbed by the killer. The central protagonist carries on running away and takes cover to breath behind a tree. He then comes head on with the killer, which we can see from a point of view shot in the eyes of the antagonist. The screen then fades to black.

Target Audience

Target Audience

For our opening 2 minutes of a thriller we as a group need to have a target audience so we can make the thriller for that specific audience.

We have chosen teenagers from the age of 11 to 16 year olds for our target audience. The reason for this chose is that our entire group is 16 years old and so we can specify the opening for what we want to see in terms of the action, characters and colours so we can achieve good levels of interest for our thriller.

Our classification for our thriller film would be a 12 age rating. This is because we would be able to attract more teens to watch our movie as it will have a lower age restriction. With our thriller being a 12 age restriction we include things such as:

·        Some strong language but it must be infrequent

·        Moderate violence but not too detailed as there should be no emphases on the blood or gory.

The way that we will achieve this age restriction is to have low levels of violence and do not show any blood or gore if somebody dies. Also we could have some to little amounts of swearwords and this could include the less offensive like (Pr*ck or Tw*t) to also keep the age rating low.

In our group we did research to find out:

·        What type of thriller do you prefer?

·        What do you expect from the opening first two minutes of a thriller?

·        How many characters would you want in the opening?

·        What time period would you want the thriller to be set in?

·        Do you want there to be a narrative theme?

With this information we could find out what people wanted from a thriller and then cater it to our target audience which is teens. We will do this by getting all this information from the survey questions and then doing the type of thriller which the audience wants.

Marketing and Promotion

A way of Promoting our thriller film would be by creating a teaser trailer, this would be a very short video that would be broadcasted in the cinema before other films of a similar genre, (as they would be our target audience) and after nine o’clock as we are not aiming our film at children as it is a horror thriller. This trailer would make the audience watching our trailer start to ask questions about it if it is short and sweet, not giving too much information away. The benefits of this would be that people will start talking about the advert and being publicised more. Another place to put our trailer would be online so adverts on YouTube before a video or on Netflix when somebody is about to watch a thriller film as they would be interested in that kind of film to help us build a larger audience.

 

Another way of promotion would be too have a large poster made and put up on a billboard of the main character looking sinister on a billboard; these posters would be put inside the cinema so it will attract the attention of “movie buffs.

Equipment

The equipment needed:

Panasonic Video camera to record the film

A Tripod to keep the camera steady when recording

External microphone to record sounds and gets a lot better sound quality when recording the film

The bad guy should wear dark clothes in the film which would connote to the audience that he/she is the bad guy and know who to be fear full off

The two people running away from the bad guy should wear bright clothing to show that they are pure and innocent in the whole scenario

The weapon to be used would be a sharp object as they are commonly used as murder weapons in thrillers and can add a certain fear factor in the film

 

Time

The film will be recorded in an evening between the times 4 o clock to 6 o clock the reason for this is that it would not be too dark all the time when recording as it is winter while we are recording the nights will be colder and darker this will work to our advantage as we are recording a horror thriller so they tend to be darker as that makes them more horrific.

We want the recording to all be finished by the 7^th of February so we have plenty of time to be able to assess what we need to edit possibly re-record certain parts of the video and edit the video  to make it as good as we can.

Classification of Films

Classification of Films

U stands for ‘universal’, the films are suitable for ages 4 and up.

·         U’s don’t contain any nudity, discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex or violence

·         They only contain very mild language (e.g. damn, hell) and the occasional ‘bloody’ or ‘bugger’

·         A U film may include brief fight scenes, and any emotional stress is resolved quickly and the outcome is reassuring. Horror is the same; it will be resolved quickly and broken up with comedy or music

·         Examples are: monsters university, the Smurfs, Cars 2 and Diary of a Wimpy Kid

·         I think this is a correct classification and has valid reasons for not including violence, horror etc.

                           PG stands for Parental Guidance, the films are suitable for ages 8 and up.

·         This means a film is suitable for general viewing, however, some scenes may not be suitable younger children and parents should consider whether it will be suitable for their children.

·         Not all PG films are made with children in mind, films like the artist are rated PG because they are suitable for ages 8a and over, but it was mostly grownups that enjoyed it.

·         No theme is banned from PG’s, as long as it is treated appropriately to the rating. Smoking and drinking won’t be glamorised, and if a child is seen to be smoking or drinking then it will be emphasised to look bad.

·         It may contain mild bad language such as ‘shit’ or ‘son of a bitch’ however; frequent use of bad language or it being used in an overly aggressive way then it will be passed to the next category.

·         There should be no detail of violence in a PG, blood may be seen but the way the wound is inflicted should not be covered in detail. Horror is allowed in ‘jump’ moments and scary scenes, but scenes showing significant horror should not be very long.

·         Actions that children may copy like playing with electricity or climbing in a washing machine are not accepted, especially if they are seen as safe or fun.

 

 

 

     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

12A means anyone over the age of 12 can go and watch the film, and anyone under the age of 12 has to be ‘accompanied’ by an adult- someone over the age of 18.

·         The 12 certificate is used for videos, DVD’s and Blu-rays only. 12A is used for cinemas.

·         12’s are seen as appropriate for people over 12, but parents can take younger children if they feel it’s appropriate.

·         It is stated that 12 or 12A’s may contain strong language (eg f***) but it must be infrequent. The context of strong language is important, aggressive uses of strong language may cause the film or DVD to be placed in the 15 category.

·         Sex may be briefly and discreetly portrayed in 12 and 12A’s. Verbal sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers.

·         Moderate violence is allowed but should not be too detailed. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood but occasional gory moments will be permitted if they are justified by their context.

 

·         No one under the age of 15 is allowed to watch 15 films at the cinema, or buy/rent 15 films.
